Wonder Woman

A drawing of Wonder Woman by Nathan Olsen.

Did this little drawing last week and I thought I’d share. I had a huge crush on Linda Carter when I was a kid. Ah, youth.

Self-Portrait

A self-portrait digital painting by Nathan Olsen.

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you already know that I was knocked off my feet this week by a pretty bad cold. It probably didn’t help that I mixed up the Claritin and Sudafed in the medicine cabinet. Well, at least I didn’t have to deal with allergies on top of everything else.

Anyway, before I got sick, I had been dabbling with a new way of approaching my work in Photoshop. I’ve always relied on a pencil sketch when I work in the program and I wanted to see how things might go if I tried to just paint digitally. No pencil sketches or scanning of any kind — just me and the brush tool and a couple of layers.

So far, I really like the results. Its stylistically somewhat different from the work I’ve done up until now, but it’s really starting to bring me the same kind of pleasure I get from oil painting, but without requiring a ventilated studio space and expensive paints. I’m excited to see where this goes.

I thought for today I’d share a little self-portrait I did yesterday — it’s a bit of a caricature, albeit a subtle one. There’s another piece that I previewed on Twitter the other day, but I’d like to fiddle around with that one a bit more before posting it here.

If you’d like to see me turn into a zombie, I used this self-portrait for Friday’s Haiku Comics.

T-Shirt Pre-Order!

Promotional artwork for the new Haiku Comics Zombie Buffet t-shirt by Nathan Olsen and Robert Olsen.

I am very pleased to announce that Haiku Comics is producing a zombie themed t-shirt featuring my artwork. The 4-color design references a comic strip my brother and I made last year, but the art has been significantly cleaned-up and fine-tuned. I’m really excited about this project and can’t wait to see (and wear) the final product.

If you’re interested in buying one of these t-shirts, we are currently running a pre-order and offering $3 off the regular price. We’re hoping that this price break will be enough incentive to get in some early orders so we can get a better idea as to what sizes will be popular. After all, the last thing we want to do is invest our money into mens large t-shirts, only to discover that the bulk of the orders that come in are for womens medium t-shirts.

Because we all know how popular zombies are with the ladies.

For the mens t-shirts, we will be silkscreening onto black Alstyle 1301 t-shirt blanks. I personally bought and tried on several different mens t-shirt blanks to ensure that we picked one that we could feel confident people would enjoy wearing. The Alstyle 1301 should be familiar to a lot of guys, it’s very popular with surf and skate companies.

Womens t-shirts are going to use black American Apparel 2102 t-shirt blanks. This t-shirt blank is very popular and well known, so we’re pretty sure that it will be well received as well.

Anyway, the t-shirts will ship mid-April. If you’re interested in purchasing a t-shirt, please visit the Haiku Comics online store.

Superheroes!

A drawing of Spider-Man by Nathan Olsen.

It’s been a while since I’ve just drawn for fun. It seems like everything I do these days has to have a purpose. Last night, I had a little energy left before bed and decided to doodle for a bit.

It’s been a long time since I’ve drawn any superheroes, but for some reason I decided it might be neat to draw Spider-Man Haiku Comics-style.

Also in the notebook:

Thank You!

First shipment of prints by Nathan Olsen.

I have really appreciated all of the positive feedback I’ve been getting for my work the past few days. A big thank you to OMG Posters and NOTCOT for featuring the prints I have available for sale over at my online store.

A few orders for prints have been trickling in. The photo above is of the first batch of orders that just got sent out today. As predicted, this print has been a clear favorite. Go figure.

Now Open For Business

A drawing of LoveBot by Nathan Olsen.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m proud to announce that I finally have an online store! For the grand opening, I’m starting out with giclée prints of three of my Lovebot illustrations. The prints come on 13″x19″ acid-free fine art paper and have an image area of 12.25″x15.5″. I brought these prints with me to APE this year and they stopped a lot of people in their tracks as they walked by our table. Especially this one. If you are at all tempted to purchase one of these prints, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

If you have any questions or concerns about the store, please let me know. Happy shopping!
